Hidden Secret to Freelancing in recent times
Right from the very beginning of time, man educated himself to survive through farming, hunting and provision of shelter from his environment. The very essence of human existence is built upon the substance of education. Dictionary.com defines
Times higher education magazine in a 1971 publication defined higher education as an optional final stage of formal learning that occurs after completion of secondary education. It focuses on higher forms of knowledge of specific fields, no man is an island of knowledge they say but with the help of unity in different fields of thought, each individual can learn and contribute to the development of the nation in several imaginable and unimaginable ways.
Higher Education in Nigeria has its history dated back to the early 20th century when the University College Ibadan now University of Ibadan was established. It opened the floor for several other higher institutions in the country over time. The early stage of our higher educational system was a competitive and highly productive system of education with quality graduates worthy of developing the nation in every aspect of life. Later on, in the 1960’s to 80’s, with the inception of Oil and Gas, Agriculture and several other economy enhancing activities were left behind. Nigeria’s higher educational system was gradually affected. The lure of making easy and quick money from Oil and Gas succeeded in setting a good ground for the need to acquire certificates purposely to get a good white collar job in the oil and gas sector, with time corruption started setting in, admission was no longer based on merit but on whom the candidates know. Certificates started getting sold and bought just to add to the portfolio of individuals to achieve personal goals. Then the tragic fall of the national higher educational system was gradually becoming eminent.
In a new publication on November 9, 2018 according to premium times, only three higher institutions of learning in Nigeria can boost of being among the top 1000 higher institution of learning in the world. A conflict of interest comes in at this point in time, could it be the bad institution of learning that produced the bad qualities of leaders or is it the bad qualities of leaders that caused the bad state of our nation’s higher educational system? According to transparency International, Nigeria and Africa as a whole is underdeveloped as a result of excessive corruption in every level of the society. From the highest government official to the lowest Student Union and Class representatives, Bribery, misappropriation of funds and nepotism have become skill-sets to be celebrated, rather than work towards the general development of the continent, African leaders loot the national wealth of their respective countries knowing that the approval of the people can be gotten by distributing few cups of rice and bags of garri every four years. There is need for complete reorientation of our societal norms and values through sound basic education and quality higher education.
